NETWORKING is a crucial tool for business success, which is nothing new to the beauty industry. The beauty industry has always supported and inspired each other. I have not met any individual in this industry who does not want to support someone else’s success. We help each other without any strings attached. Networking isn’t just about making connections; it is about cultivating meaningful relationships, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities. There are a few common types of networking that can be very beneficial to your business’ growth — professional, social, and online, for example.
- PROFESSIONAL. Engage with like-minded individuals within your profession. Attend conferences, participate in industry-specific networking events, and join professional organizations. Attend as many events as you can to develop and maintain relationships within your professional network.
- SOCIAL. Being social allows you to build and expand beyond your industry. This may include making connections through social events, community gatherings, and social media platforms. For example, you could offer a workshop or interview with one of your online connections.
- ONLINE. Connections are through social media, such as LinkedIn and X. Increase your visibility by posting articles and commenting.
Networking can feel like a job on its own, but nowadays, it is expected in order to succeed. By networking, you broaden your opportunities and expand your reach. Remember to always be genuine and sincere.
Learn to Love Networking Tips
Yes, networking can feel like a job all on its own. We have to put a lot of time and effort into them by attending events, engaging with others, and following up on our connections, but how it is perceived can change that overwhelming feeling. Some connections can feel transactional and lack genuine connection, but finding commonality through our connections can change our mindset if we focus on the opportunities for discovery and learning, and enjoying the outings or events. Here are some tips to build genuine relationships with our connections.
- SET GOALS. Prior to a meeting or event, have a clear goal in mind that you want to achieve, but also keep an open ear for additional opportunities that may arise.
- PREPARE. Meeting someone new means an introduction. Having a rehearsed quick statement of who you are, what you do, and a little info on the company you own or work for will ease the stammering for words, especially when having to announce to a crowd.
- LISTEN. Actual listening and engaging in the conversation will show genuine interest. Ask those meaningful questions. Allow them to do most of the talking while you do the listening.
- FOLLOW UP. Always follow up with someone you just met. Don’t become the forgettable person. Start building that relationship, whether you need them now or in the future.
- OFFER SUPPORT. By just providing a simple connection, you may have turned around someone’s stressful situation into something extremely helpful for them and/or their business. They will always remember you for that. So, even those little suggestions or connections can be huge to someone else.
- REPUTATION. Always remain professional and, most importantly, reliable. Your reputation is crucial in building trust and long-term relationships.
- SOCIAL MEDIA. Though this is not considered a personable way to connect, there are many ways you can connect where your audience can feel it is directed towards them. Just doing a personable interview relatable to the audience you want to attract will make many more connections for you than you ever thought imaginable. Engage with conversations through direct messages or responding to the chat.
- MENTORING. Sharing what you know or your knowledge on a specific topic shows that you genuinely care about others’ success. Be that person who inspires.
SUCCESS WILL FOLLOW
when you always approach networking with AUTHENTICITY, CLEAR GOALS, and a LONG-TERM PERSPECTIVE.
